Thank you so much for stopping by!
Here is a brief bio of me as a makeup artist and a little of my history.
My name is Tobi Britton, and I am a Makeup Artist that specializes in Airbrush Makeup.
Once upon a time….
From 1991 till 2008, I owned the very popular studio “The Makeup Shop, NYC” . I started out as a freelance makeup artist when I was 21, (I am now 55!) and over the past 34 years, I figured out that I shaped the faces of hundreds of models, celebs and politicians, and taught the art and craft of makeup design and application to close to a thousand fledgling makeup artists.
I always loved working on set, behind the scenes- and still do!
Some of my favorite moments….
My biggest “thing” to happen to me career wise was being nominated for an Emmy for my work as the head makeup Artist on The Jane Pauley Show.
People always get a kick out of the people I have worked with, and ask me who were my favorites.
One of my favorite women was Angelina Jolie– (pre-Brad and charity work) she was the most kind, sweet and humble “celeb” I had ever met.
I met her on a shoot for Rolling Stone magazine. I was hired to be her “Mud” designer, (Body Painting mud) and my friend Matin who is one of my favorite makeup artists and also creative director for Laura Mercier Cosmetics did her makeup.
I also had an awesome time being Head Makeup Artist for the show “Cosby”,
This wasn’t the “Huxtables” version, it was the later show that starred Madeline Kahn in it before she passed. It was like a huge family, and I had the chance to work on a bunch of celebrities there, each week a different one! Sinbad- (great hugger!), Robin Givens, Vivica Fox, Kathy Ireland, Anthony Quinn, William Shatner and a bunch more.
Bill Cosby touched my life in an incredible way and i will never forget him. My sister had recently lost her 18 year old son Adam, and had I mentioned to Dr. Cosby while doing his makeup that my sister had asked me how he was able to deal with the death of his son. He told me he would talk to her. She flew up from Florida, and he stopped us in the middle of shooting and told the crew to take a break. He spoke to her for like a half hour in the bleechers and told her how he copes with his loss of Ennis. That was a pretty amazing thing to do for someone who he didn’t even know. It also cost the show thousands of dollars but he didn’t care- he was doing the right thing.
On a funny note-
I did Richard Nixon’s Makeup (along with his family) for his Presidential Library, and he told me “I like your stockings.” completely serious! (he was looking down while I was doing his makeup and it was the 90’s and I had white polkadot stockings and a white, big shouldered Norma Kamali jumpsuit! I have to post the picture when i find it!! Hilar!!
I told Bill Clinton that he would win the election (I worked on one of his commercials), did a commercial for Hillary Clinton a few years ago.
I told Michael Bolton that he was going to be really, really famous when I worked on one of his first videos.
Hmmmn- maybe I should have been a fortune teller….
I even did makeup for The Dunkin’ Donuts Man “Time to make the donuts”
I currently just love doing shoots in the city, makeup and hair for weddings and private clients, and microblading eyebrows!!
My NEW Biggest Thing is that I am doing Micropigmentation (permanent makeup) for Breast cancer survivors. I give pre chemo patients eyebrow and eyeliner so when the hair eventually falls out during treatment, the patient has a more normal appearance. We take things like having eyebrows for granted- not thinking how shocking it can be if we didn’t have them. I really feel that small things like that can boost a person’s moral and help them to feel a little better which might help them heal faster. After breast reconstruction, I create a new areola with permanent makeup which restores the look of the areola, and is a crucial last step in making a woman feel whole again. I provide this service at no cost for women with no insurance or just can’t afford it.
All of the proceeds from my
now go to help me provide this service to women in need.
It is my way of taking all of my gifts and making a difference in people’s lives…and you can’t get anything better than that!
““Tobi Britton is simply the best make up stylist I’ve ever worked with. She has amazing expertise, long acquired with years of experience on set and in her wonderful store; she the patience, the good humor, and the charm to keep all those that sit in her chair relaxed and themselves. I can remember a very nervous Pete Townsend succumbing instantly to Tobi’s unique combination of wit and professionalism. He was putty in her hands. I’d work with Tobi anytime, anywhere, she is the best there is.”
